Raw Dog Food Diet Tips

by Jamie Lansley

Raw dog food has become extremely popular these days especially among pet owners who are conscious of what they feed their dogs. There are a lot of positive changes that can be noted when you feed dogs with the right type of raw food such as fish, vegetables, beef, chicken, and lamb.

Some pet owners get alarmed when they see that their dogs start to drink less when they finally get into this new diet. But this is actually quite normal, unless the dogs refuse to drink any liquid entirely. Dogs that feed on kibble and other commercialized foods get less moisture from those foods. This is why they tend to drink more water.

As part of the raw dog food diet, fish like mackerel is an essential source of nutrients. Fish is known to contain omega 3 as well as iodine. But some dogs may not fancy the thought of eating fish. In this case you can try cold water fish on them or using marine oil mixed in with their food.

Dogs who are currently on a raw dog food diet can also eat less. Unless specified by the veterinarian, it is recommended that they take in food at least once every day. Contrary to popular belief, dogs are not like humans who need to have 3 meals per day. Doing so actually helps them form the habit of feeling hungry often and also leads to the possibility of digesting food inadequately.

To help dogs eat consistently, you can also develop a routine for them everyday. When they start to eat at a specific period of time each day they would be prompted by hunger naturally in the future. This would also help them avoid becoming obese.

Raw dog food diet also means you can feed your dog with raw bones. Bones are more dangerous to feed when they are cooked because they tend to break easily as splinters. When feeding dogs with bones, just remember to feed them with chicken or lamb bones as these are soft enough to be ground and masticated properly.

Veggies are also good for your dogs' health. But just like kids, some dogs may be fickle about eating vegetables. What you can do instead is mix some bits of vegetables in the meals that you prepare for them. This way they would eat it unconsciously.

When it comes to feeding pets with raw dog food, make sure that you create a proper schedule for them to follow. This way you can be sure that they get the right amount of nutrition. Also, keep them de-wormed to lessen the chances of parasites and also clean the food prior to giving it to them so that you can prevent salmonella.
