Amazing Item, Love It - Best Dog Food Critique
All 3 of my dogs had bad reactions, and I even did a gradual change over because I was told ahead of time (by my friend) that they changed the formula. My one golden scratched himself raw to the point I had to take him to the vet.
The beef and fish meal gives her the worst fish breath imaginable. I don't know if the food causes her to want to try giving me face kisses more than normal, but every time she gets near me after eating this her breath is like a shotgun of stank.
We switched up from Nutro chicken and rice to Newman's own and chip's bowel movements are so much more dense and compact. Our vet says it's a sign of good food. Last night, I fed her the food again, and sure enough, she threw up in the night. I trusted and liked this food - and all things under the Newman's Own brand - but I'll never buy their products again. Our breeder recommended this dog food. She did well on the old formula, except for what we THOUGHT were seasonal hot spots where she would chew the hair off of the insides of her legs and also her behind. My dog transitioned from the shelter food to Canidae effortlessly and I saw an improvement in her coat, stool, and energy level. When the formula changed she also did wonderfully. I live in a small town that is 60 miles away from the nearest big city and I am unable to obtain the dog food locally. It is a real convenience for me to buy this from Amazon and the price is equitable.
I only found out today when I took her to the vet, and was informed that these intestinal bugs were usually located in the dog food. Sure enough, when I got home and looked in the dog food, guess what I found on the bottom of the bag, tiny mites, it went out into the garbage containers.
After about a week on the new food, he had noticeably more energy and his coat started to become much healthier. On top of that, the odor that he emitted started to subside until it was no longer there. I just recently found Newman's Own Organics. Would eat only the Newman's' and leave the Wellness to later when she was really hungry. Our vet, who has been practicing for over 25 years and is the best in our area, was puzzled when nothing worked. Our dog started to lose his fur, has odd looking spots all over, under his chin he has open sores that do not go away no matter how much we wash and put medicine on it, and he's consistently scratching and making it worse.
After a lot of research, I decided to switch my 3-yr old Doberman from Iams to Canidae and have been very impressed with the product. Samson LOVES this stuff too, with the Iams I had to entice him to eat by mixing it with canned food/table food, but with the Canidae, he eagerly wolfs it down by itself. Unlike a lot of subpar dog foods, there is no corn! Plus, my dogs love its taste, and it's a great value for the quality of this food.
Apparently that has also led to changes that the company has not been willing to address. I'm very disappointed that a food I recommended so highly in the past has had these problems. Her coat and skin now are perfect! No more itching, scratching and chewing.
