Another source for names would be cartoon characters particularly if you want a not so serious name for your pet. Obelix would be suitable for dogs that are large but carefree and loves to eat. For intelligent ones, you can name them after the witty character Asterix.

There are also German terms that exhibit specific character like the word Adalhard that means strong and noble. Baldur, on the other hand, means brave which is suitable for a daring pet.

There are common names that tend to signify some traits which you can use as pet names. Some of these are Traute for trusted, Hugo which stands for witty, or Heidi for noble female dogs. You can also choose the name Reinhard for a physically outstanding and robust dog. In Germany, these are not popular person names but they would sound unique for your canines.
